“Resolution in Support of Creating Campuses Free of Sexual Misconduct and Sexual Violence”

This resolution was enacted by the CalState Student Association (CSSA) in January 2018. Athena Garcia-Gunn was a co-author in this resolution in response to former Secretary Betsy DeVos’ mission to deconstruct Title IX protections on campuses across the united states. Although imperfect, these protections afford millions of women with a basic infrastructure of due process on their college campuses, in the event they experience sexual abuse, harassment or misconduct from their peers or campus staff.

Upon being unanimously enacted by CSSA , the protections ensured that even if Secretary Betsy DeVos dismantled such human rights, that students under the CalState University system would still be protected. This resolution went on to affect all 23 campuses in the US and 454,000+ students across California. Upon being enacted by the CSSA leadership, the resolution was also submitted to the Department of Education on behalf of all CalState students, during the public commentary phase provided regarding Title IX.
